Hi Andy,

One thought is to check out if the Microsoft Works Installation Files
are still there.

It's a pity you didn't try to run Disk Cleanup immediately removing
Works, since that may have picked that up.

BTW, did you get rid of those Update $ files I told you about in an
earlier message?

George.

Subject: [access-uk] Update to my drive space issue

Hi all -

Problem update:

Thanks to certain suggestions, I've managed to free up some drive
space, but still can't reinstall JFW [I want to reinstall to the D:\
partition,
and not the C:\ where it originally resided].

Here's what's happened in detail, please bear with me, and hope I've
made sense, as I very much need to resolve this.

This issue is on an XP netbook, which seems to have turned off System
Restore automatically because of low disk space, I know this, because
I
get a message telling me to free 200mb in order to turn it on again.

I've now managed to delete some programmes that came pre-installed,
such
as Office Works, and Star Office, and Acrobat reader, but here's my
current problem. with All the above installed, along with JFW,
together,
they produced the low disk space message, so firstly, I uninstalled
JFW =
planning to reinstall it from a pen drive, to the d:\ partition [the
c:\
is where the OS resides, and where all programmes have installed by
default.]

I then found I couldn't get JFW to install to the D:\ drive, even
though
I chose the custom install, and change the drive from C:\ to D:\. What
was happening was that when I clicked the install button, I got a
message telling me that there wasn't enough space on the chosen
volumes
for the installation, it wanted to install 132mb to the C:\ drive, and
27mb to the D:\ drive. I had some sighted help, and it looked as if we
had chosen the d:\ as the destination, and couldn't figure out why the
=
installation wanted to put the bulk of the installation on the C:\
drive, and that small 27mb on the D:\ drive. What it was saying in
respect of the C:\ drive, was that it needed 132mb, and there was only
45 mb free space, thus giving a deficit of 87mb.

As we couldn't get any further with this, we uninstalled the above
mentioned programmes, which through up another strange issue; for
example, it says that the Office Works programme was 400mb, but when
we
uninstalled it, it only gave us back about 180mb of drive space.
Although we were puzzled about this, we thought we'd have a go at
installing JFW back to the C:\ drive, where it originally resided, but
when we tried, we got a message telling us that JFW needed 160mb, and
we
only had 132mb, begging the question, what the hell had happened to
the
extra capacity of a few minutes earlier, that said there was 185mb
free?

Hope this makes sense.

Being totally frustrated by now, we decided to turn off, before it got
chucked out of the window! but when doing so, we then got a screen
telling us that updates were being installed, and not to turn off, so
we
left them to install. After they had done so [35 items] our capacity
had
come all the way down to 19mb!

Can anybody offer any thought/ideas/counselling :)

Thanks

Andy
