Further to my reply to Ray yesterday, from my friend:

Your assumptions are probably correct.
The max current on a USB port at start up is 100 ma.  If the port then
requests more and is granted the request it can take up to 500 ma.  Thus two
ports can (with emphasis on the can) take up to one amp between them if the
motherboard or hub allows it.  Data rates are usually restricted by the
peripheral or the (windows) software so one port for data is usually fast
enough.
