Hi Jim,
You need to buy a step down converter. It changes the voltage from 240 volts, down to 110 volts. They are about £10 to £15 depending on where you can get it. I have several of these, and they work a treat. Any good electrical store should be able to get you sorted.

Cheers.
Jim.

Subject: [access-uk] US appliances

Hi List,

I have a friend staying here who is from the USA.  She brought a 4TB hard
drive with her and we're not sure how to connect it to the British 240 volt
system.  We're not sure what sort of adaptor / transformer to buy as we
don't want this hard drive to get fried.
All suggestions very welcome
