Andy, I'm looking and shaking my head here, but you will need to clear the letters previously entered in your password field. There is a delete key right on the edge of the right-hand side. You may also find a "Clear" key but can't remember whether that crops up in all edit fields or not.

Some routers can be a bit temperamental if set to both B and G modes, in other words, mixed; but I'm not convinced that's your answer so perhaps persevere some more first, after a rest and some light relief perhaps!

Wish I were near enough to come and have a go for you, though I'd probably make a pretty good hash of typing into the keyboard, as I usually do. I'm so thankful for my external Apple keyboard, let me tell you.

We'll all be so pleased for you once you get in there!

wi-fi

Hi Kevin -

Of all the things that have permission to connect to my
network, I've only got the laptop turned on, and I even
turned it off to see if it made any difference, but it
didn't.
I guess then, if there is a limit of how many devices my
Netgear will allow, as long as they're not all on
together, I should be ok regarding this aspect of things?

I certainly accept that I may well be making typing
errors with my password, just can't see how, as when I
put my finger on the letter, I tap the screen twice with
another finger, and hear the typing sound that denotes
the character has been entered in the edit field. I
briefly had sighted help last night, and that attempt
didn't work either!
Maybe Ibrahim has a point regarding a possible fault, but
I'd have thought if that were the case, then most
probably the Touch wouldn't see the list of available
networks in the first place. All a bit of a bugger
<smile> -

Andy, certainly that password field doesn't clear in the
same way an edit field would using a PC. It took me
about a dozen atempts to get my password right. What I
did was come out of the screen that's asking for the
password on each failed attempt and back in again then
from scratch to ensure the field was definitely clear
and I finally got it right.
Sorry, but my money would be on you not keying in quite
correctly or your router not allowing another device to
connect due to the number of existing connections rather
than any other kind of issue with settings.
Regards.

Yes, the password is longer than 7 characters, about 15
or so. Does this matter for some reason? I do notice
when the touch says "unable to connect..." that if I go
back to the edit field, it says "password field 32
characters." I did wonder if this meant the edit field
hasn't cleared, and so when I have another attempt, it
is already adding to what I tried from last time,
instead of from the start, in a clear edit field?
No, the password isn't generic, it's one of my own.

I didn't quite get point number 3, I turn off the
router over night if powering off and on is what you
were eluding too.

A couple of things;
1) Is your password longer than 7 characters ?
2) Is your network name the generic name like netgear
? Change that 3) Have you reset the router ? ( power
on and off to reset the dhcp device leases )

I also remember something from years ago that you had
to add an extra character to encrypted passwords on
some networks to log in but i cant quite remember it
just now. I will go look
As you say the kindle is fine with it just the touch
being picky but that seems to be a general issue with
Apples and netgears . I think they want you to but an
airport :-)

Ah, Andy, the other thing is that there is a choice
to be made about what
type of key you're using, WEP, SKP2 or whatever.
Make sure that's set correctly. (I'm not sure if I
had to set mine or it was chosen when the
connection was seen, but I didn't run into a problem
there myself.)

Hi Andy.

The password you will need to connect your ITouch
to your wireless network is exactly the same as for
your PC and Kindle. You need to make sure that it
is entered exactly as it has been set, IE with
capitals, punctuation marks and so on if you use
those as part of your key. Also, depending on your
router, you may have a limit on the number of
devices you can connect at any one time, since some
basic routing equipment, typically the junk boxes
some ISP's provide their customers with will only
allow a very few connections. You may wish to ask
your ISP about this if your still not having any
luck, but if the equipment is your own bought
separately then the problem will be elsewhere. All the best, Ibrahim.

Marie - please don't feel asking the obvious is
patronising, it isn't too me anyway, sometimes I
missed the obvious, and other times I just don't
have the knowledge.
This was actually helpful, but hasn't solved my
issue yet.
You might be getting me there however, you see, I
thought the key or password I needed would be the
same one I use to connect my mobile or Kindle to
my network [Guess I still don't know the
difference between WLAN and WI-FI!]
It seems from what you say, I actually need some
code that is written on the router? I've got a
note of the 'password' for the router, which is
different to the pass key I use to connect my
mobile and Kindle to my network
Since your message, I tried with this router
password, but still couldn't get connected.
Incidentally, this password for the router is one
I created when I set up my home network a few
years ago, so I must have changed whatever the
default one was at the time. Does this make sense? -

Not sure how to say this and not sound
patronising so, here it is: The code you must insert is not your
personal password, it is your WIFI key the code
tied to your router, written on it somewhere, usually in very small
print. Sorry if I state the obvious, but, to me at
least, a password and a WIFI key code are 2 different
things: the password allows you to change the settings on
your router, the key code allows other devices to talk
to it and hear it.

Good luck!

Hi Damon and Marie - Yes, airplane mode is off.
The Touch can see my WLAN, the name shows up on
the screen, and I double tap to select it, and
that brings up the screen with an edit field on
to enter my password, and this is where I hit a
wall, as when I type it in, and have had sighted
help to do this too, it says "connecting to..."
then comes back and says "unable to connect
to..." I'm able to connect a Kindle to my home network
ok, using the same password, but not this Touch.
Any further thoughts? -

I just use my wep number from the bottom of the
modem. Didn't have to do anything else.

I assume that in the wireless part of settings,
you have wireless turned
to on?

Hi all -

Bit stuck, I find my wi-fi name under settings,
and try to enter my password, but I get an unable to
connect message. Is there something else I need
to do, I ask because I Have seen screens asking
for IP address, and Router number, and DSN etc, do I
need these fields just to connect to my wi-fi, or
just my password? -
