Personally I find one of the strongest and weakest parts of Jaws is its
handling of synthetiser voices.
The strong feature of Jaws is that you can download and install for free
several high quality Vocaliser Expressive Voices. The weak feature is that easy
access to switching between the various voices Jaws supports is not easily
available on the fly by default.
The answer is to create voice profiles for each voice that you install. After
doing this pressing Jaws key plus control plus S will open up a list for you to
change voice profiles on the fly by simply cursoring up and down the list of
available voices and pressing enter on the voice you want to use. Personally
I think this should be done for you by default . Somebody else may have a
better method but this is what I do.
1. Download all the voices you want to install from the Freedom Scientific
Voices Download Page. Then install each voice in turn.
2. Restart Jaws so that the voices will become available.
3. Go to the Jaws control panel or use insert J to bring up the context menu
from the system tray. From the menus select Options then Voices then Voice
adjustment.
This will open up a dialogue box with all the properties of the currently
loaded voice.
Now in this dialogue box change the voice by first selecting the desired
synthetiser . – in my case Vocaliser Expressive and then tab to the other
properties such as the desired language for example English Us, or English
Australian etc. Now continue tabbing until you hear the option to change the
voice person. Note the name of the person, for example Nathan Premium. Now
simply tab to save as, hit the space bar and save the voice profile by typing
in the name of the person, in this case Nathan Premium. Do not accept the
option to make this the default voice unless you want to do this. Now tab
around and change either the language or voice person to say for example Oliver
Premium , and then again go to save as and this time type in Oliver Premium in
the save as dialogue.
Do not close the dialogue box after saving but instead tab around to change to
another voice like Ava Premium. So Continue tabbing around and changing the
voice person details as desired until you have saved a profile for all of the
voices you want.
When finished finally close the dialogue box for adjusting voice.
Now you will find all your voice profiles coming up in an easy list with insert
control S and switching voices on the fly becomes very easy and convenient.
