Hi Mandy.

Go to tools then options. the general category should be selected in the options list box. tab and disable the show thunderbird start page option.
Shift tab to the categories list box. arrow down to display. tab and arrow right to advanced. tab to open messages in and arrow down to a new message window.
shift tab back to the categories list box and go down to advanced. tab and disable the global search indexer.
Tab to OK and that should be all you need to do. You may also want to disable the preview message pane from the layout options in the view menu. The today pane can also be disabled. I hope this helps?

Very best wishes,

Mo.
