Try \huge or \Huge (note the case at the beginning of the second command for 
size.  Don't know about the specific font you ask for but \text sf for sans 
serif will be close.

  Thanks everyone for all your responses about text editors.  I got edit
  pad lite to work, but it kept resetting to small font again, so my
  fianc=E9 showed me how to access a text editor from the command prompt
  that can be resized, menus and all.  This morning I have sucessfully
  turned latex source code into a pdf file and am very pleased with
  myself.  My next challenge is to alter the output font - ideally to
  Verdana, 20 point, any ideas?  I am told it is something to do with
  "stylesheets" but searching for "latex stylesheets" has got me nowhere
  so perhaps "stylesheets" is the wrong word.  Any suggestions?
