even with the talking books only a certain number can be had at any one time
and to get a new one at least one must be returned. there are financial
penalties here also when books are not returned on time. however, I understand
that with overdrive there is a limit of six books so until there are less than
six and you book cannot be downloaded.

But, in America, one must return the book within a specific time period, else
they must pay for the books in fines accrued. My daughter, when she was a
child, ran up upward of 200 dollars in book fines. Because she failed to
return books she took out of the public library. Without telling me she
hadn't returned them. She got them using my library card. So, when I wanted
to borrow a CD or a Video cassette I was not able to do so till I paid her
fines. Unfortunately we couldn't find the books she borrowed to return them
to the library. On the other hand, there isn't a time limit when we borrow
books from the library for the blind.

well indeed I appreciate that but I was only making the comment that we
should have them free as people who can read print can go to a library and
get a book and they do not pay for that book.

Eleanor,
Don't you know that the Government doesn't give a stuff! It's going to get
worse as well with their austerity agenda.

print books and of course as we do not read print books why should we be
paying an extra cost for alternative format

Same here, I know the tb service costs, subscriptions met some of that
cost in prior times, but now it's all free, they will have a hard time if
donations don't keep up with what even the heavily subsidised subscriptions
brought in.

I dont necessarily think TB should be free. I am very happy for RNIB to
seek donations. I just wonder about where it might end up. Will the
strategy
work?

Let me see if I have understood this properly. You think that the talking
book service should be "free" - i.e. paid for from donations, but you don't
think RNIB should actually ask for donations )which of course we are all
free to make or not according to our preferences and circumstances) in order
to run it.
Is that right?

Hello,
Just got email fron RNIB Connect, which contained the following:
"Help grow the Talking Books library
RNIB has launched a new online fund allowing supporters to donate more
easily, as teams work hard to reach their targets through unique fundraising
drives and activities.
The charity encourages those who find the talking books service of
benefit to setup an online fund and a new book to the online shelf. You can
find out more by visiting rnib.org.uk/talkingbooks"
Is it just me? I am puzzled as to exactly what this means?
Comes very soon after their making Talking Books free...
The link they provide does not give further info about this fund, as far
as I can see.

pardon my sarcasm but, it looks look the "free" service wont be free
for much longer. expect the RNIB to ramp up their campaign with strap
lines along the lines of"without your support we cannot continue to
offer this service" or something to that effect./
