Ian, Margarita and tohersothers. From what I have heard, there is a
liklyhood of a blind trainer coming up with knowledge and methods that are
more relevant to blind computer users. Not always the case, but often it
is.

Speaking of taped tutorials, I'd say that's a good route to go if you have
some basic computer literacy to start with. I guess it also depends on what
sort of person you are. Some people get on quite well with individual
learning, others like to be shown, and maybe encouraged. I have speculated
before that one approach to learning could be local groups, where someone
has the energy to get them going, supplemented by audio tutorials. Another
possibility which is increasingly being used is e-learning via the net, and
speech conferencing facilities.

Overr the last couple of years or so, GW Micro seems to have been taking the
training business on itself in the US. Its not edxactly cheap, but many
find the learning groups they organise great. Maybe many get funding to
help pay for it. Dan Weirich of GW said this should be coming to the UK in
the futrefuture.

So, if you are dissatisfied with professional training, there are
alternatives emerging which could force many in the field to re-evaluate the
service they give.

RAy.

Hi Ian
I totaly agree I nearly got caught out in the same way when I bought my
computer I had a demo from a sighted rep, then bought elsewhere, then
recieved 2 days training from another source and learnt a lot more from a
blind trainer

I also used tape tutorials to teach myself a lot of things

Hi Ray & all,

My rule of thumb has generally been that if I've received training from a=
fellow blindy, it's been based on knowledge of the product and appropria=
te to my training needs. The only time this wasn't the case was when the =
product with which I'd been provided wasn't appropriate to my needs: ind=
eed, it wasn't much good for anything. On the other hand, over the years=
I've received training and demos for expensive pieces of kit from sighte=
d people and this has been very poor. Usually their knowledge of the hard=
- or software has been limited and certainly not extended to the best way=
s of using the product as a visually impaired person. For example, I was=
once considering getting a very expensive low vision aid based on video =
technology. A guy from the UK distributor - not one which normally appea=
rs on this list - came to demo the scope for me. After about two minutes=
, it was clear that he knew very little about the kit and its application=
s, much less how I could benefit from it. So I suggested that he left it=
with me to figure out for myself. =20

Cheers now.

Ian

Joan. I can certainly concur with where you are coming from regarding tr=
aining. It isn't so much the price I quibal about, more the value for mo=
ney from a quality perspective.

I once saw someone giving training to a JAWS user with a manual on their =
lap, flicking back and forth to see how you were supposed to do things wh=
ile the session was in progress. They were paying full whack for that 's=
ervice'. If you do not carry this sort of stuff in your head you should =
certainly NOT be claiming to be delivering high quality training and char=
ging accordingly.

Maybe this subject deservs a thread to itself, but I would say that it of=
ten disturbs me that so many users are not at all clear about the what ar=
e JAWS, or Window-Eyes or whatever commands, what are Windows commands an=
d what are application commands. You would have thought that could be ma=
de clear by any professional trainer worth his or her money.

Ray.

Barry,

I agree with you wholeheartedly.

The guy I had cost a fortune and knew very little about Jaws I can tell y=
ou.

I've learned far more either from friends or from the Jaws list.

Best wishes,

Joan.

I would like to know how access companies come up with a price for servic=
e and training. =A3400+ a day seems rather excessive. I also wonder if =
'a day' is actually 8 hours. When I first bought a computer six years ag=
o I paid =A3500 for two days set up and training with Jaws. The guy turn=
ed up at around ten o'clock and left at around three o'clock. That's =A3=
50 an hour... and I was obliged to give him lunch. At the time, this was=
considerably cheaper than other companies too. I understand that the tra=
ining that these people undertake is expensive although this guy told me =
that he taught himself Jaws by reading the help files.
