Hi Steve,

I largely agree with you there.  I'm still unclear as to whether some
of these systems do work that way.  I am curious, though, as to how
accurate bluetooth can be in terms of pinpointing somebody's location.
So if someone requested via an app on their phone for directions to a
certain location or beacon, would those instructions be able to tell
them go forwards a certain number of metres or whatever...well however
accurate they are I guess they'd need to use a mixture of instructions
involving distances but also referencing landmarks which people could
find with their canes/dogs/ears...

Hi Catherine,

To be honest, my take on it is transmit the info directly  to a phone via
Bluetooth using an app.

The trouble with beacons is places tend to be noisy, and the speakers on
beacons are inadequate.

I think the future is beaming info to a mobile phone.

All the best

Steve

Subject: [access-uk] Sound beacons

Hi,

I'm wondering if I can get people's thoughts/experiences of using "sound
beacons".  By which I mean devices which play recorded locational or
descriptive information, either when people approach the beacon or on a
timer.  I've read somewhere they have some of these at London Euston
station, and recall sometimes things like this have been used at Sight
Village or other events.

I'm involved in organising an event at which we're expecting significant
numbers of VI and disabled people.  The subject of sound beacons has been
raised as something we could provide.  I've only ever heard/read about
these, not used them myself.  I have some thoughts on their application but
would like to find out what other VI people think.

Has anybody experienced these sound beacons?  What did you think of them?
Did you find them useful?

Thanks for any feedback,
Catherine
