Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply.  Your views are similar to my hunch, not having
actually used them myself though.  It seems to me they have their
place and could be very useful in certain situations but in terms of a
one-off event and putting work and budget in, I think we'd probably
best be served by prioritising volunteers above beacons...

Catherine,

This may not be a very popular view, but I suggest that beacons are often
not as helpful as (often sighted) people think they ought to be!

Getting the info that visitors may need in what may be an unfamiliar
environment is, in my experience, really difficult.

Much better to get willing volunteers if available.

All the best,
Richard

Subject: [access-uk] Sound beacons

Hi,

I'm wondering if I can get people's thoughts/experiences of using "sound
beacons".  By which I mean devices which play recorded locational or
descriptive information, either when people approach the beacon or on a
timer.  I've read somewhere they have some of these at London Euston
station, and recall sometimes things like this have been used at Sight
Village or other events.

I'm involved in organising an event at which we're expecting significant
numbers of VI and disabled people.  The subject of sound beacons has been
raised as something we could provide.  I've only ever heard/read about
these, not used them myself.  I have some thoughts on their application but
would like to find out what other VI people think.

Has anybody experienced these sound beacons?  What did you think of them?
Did you find them useful?

Thanks for any feedback,
Catherine
