Hi,

First thing to have him try under the circumstances of remote support,
minimal technical background is a System Restore.  Have him run this and try
and remember a date when everything was working OK.  It could be malware, it
could be a System issue, it could be a thousand things.  I'd try rolling
back using System Restore first and take it from there.
