thanks George, so very much. The description was very clear and now I'm okay!

Turn the Echo Dot upside down (i.e. bottom up). All around the perimeter,
there are holes, but inside of that circle, other than for one tiny hole, it is
smooth. That hole is where you inert a straightened out paper clip or pin.

I am sorry but I used my sighted Computer guy to do this. He reset it with the
pin from a Guide Dog Badge that I found.
I did not think to ask him where the reset hole was.
I can have a look on google to see if any information is there.

David,
I'm glad I've read this one as I've sometimes had problems in re-connecting,
but haven't had to go to your extremes--yet! However, I know that I'll need
some guidance on finding the hole itself so, for the uninitiated, can you tell
me, please, where to look?
Thanks so much!

Subject: [access-uk] Solved Echo Dot Connection Problem
This week Virgin replaced my Broadband Router and from that
moment my Echo Dot refused to connect to the new router despite entering the
setup again and putting in the new password.
I eventually got a sighted computer engineer to come around today and it took
him an hour of frustration but he eventually got the Echo to connect.
I thought I would describe the problem and solution in case anyone else had
this issue.
Syymptom--Alexa Setup appears to work fine until the very end of the process
when you enter the Wi-Fi password and the app says preparing your Echo Dot.
You then get an error messssage. The message says "Registration
Failure--Consult the Help pages for troubleshooting.
Sometimes you also get an error message with an obscure error code.
Solution
I won't go into all the various things we tried but eventually the following
worked.
Go into the Alexa Appp and ";Forget" your Echo Dot as a selected device.
Turn off your Echo Dot and when the Dot restarts use a pin inserted into the
Echo Dot reset hole to force the Dot into a hard reset. (This is the critical
part--nothing would complete until we did this)
Now in the Alexa app re-scan for your Echo Dot and add it as a device.
Now following the instructions to connect in the normal way should work.
As I say forcing the Echo into a hard re-set was the crucial step. Restarting
both the Router and the Echo Dot alone would not do the trick.
Also trying to force a hard reset whilst in setup mode does not appear to
work, at least in our case, this is why we had to restart the Echo and then
perform the hard reset.
It seems that for some odd reason changing the Router corrupted the
registration status of my Echo Dot so whilst it was appearing in my list of
devices it could not be recognised in the connection process as a legitimate
registered device.
A hard re-set solved this.
