No offence Ray, but RNIB are just full of their own importance in my view. Having dealt with them for over 40 years, I have nothing but cynicism and contempt for their ideas now. You never even hear about who evaluates their gear, let alone what the outcome of it is.
Sorry if that offends anyone else, but it needs saying. Jackie----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray's Home" <rays-home@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Jackie, I cannot but agree with what you say. It could be evaluation is to sell the thing to us though, not for there own nefarious reasons or agenda; but not even RNIB members are privy to what goes on in that corporate head of theirs! Falling over backwards and doing myself an injury in the process, I'll reiterate that this was a speculation on my part, re. rolling out the thing as a 'national solution' to the communication problem. It might be that the portable USB device will appeal, at least in the shorter term, to local talking newspapers particularly. I've a little more news on that which I'll hold fire on for now. Chances are they'll spend a packet of charitable funds evaluating it, only for the project to fall flat on its proverbial bum!! (smile.) As far as I know, there isn't a UK distributer as yet. Whether RNIB have serious plans for using this device themselves I don't know, but they're said to be 'evaluating' it. I believe TNAUK maybe showing interest too. Just as a final comment, it was amusing when someone at RNIB seemedtobe muzing that they weren't certain what was the best way of contacting members and customers quickly in the recent mess-up over the Talking Book library, not helped by the postal strike. Hardly needs pointing out that the majority of the TB membership aren't computer users, so email's out. So, enter a device like this? Don't know the answer. Just a speculation. It is a completely accessible internet 'radio' but without the computer! So, it'll receive streaming audio from stations and services you select via a nice menu system that breaks thingsdowninto genres and individual services. Bit pricy at around £3.00,butRNIB and TNs are said to be interested. (It would pay RnIB to distribute this sort of device at a subsidy, I think, as itobviouslyavoids costs of posting out stuff. (No, not just referring toactualpostage costs.) Seems Americans are interested too, and I believe it has beenboughtby an Alaskan organisation. there is book marking and some fast forward and rewindcapability.Only two things I'd say thus far. 1. No connectivity mentioned to the outside world. 2. No in-built recording facility, though easy enough to go backandjust stream again. This does seem a much better solution to cassette replacement forTNsand the like. (People could still send in contributions viawhatevermeans they want.)
