Hi Billy. You do need a phone line to have Sky TV. It's written in the contract which you are required to sign and agree to. The reason for this is that they offer films and other third party services like shopping and sports betting and casino games. You don't have to have your Sky TB phone wire connected if you don't want to, but on installation you must have a working telephone line. ----- Original Message ----- From: "TrueBlue & Proud" <hotscot72@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Kevin, you mean then, you don't need a BT landline for Sky TV, but if you wanted to take a Sky package that included Broadband Internet, you would have to get a BT line?.

I'm asking, because at the moment, I have Virgin Media Cable, and I get my TV, TEL, and broadband internet in the one package,

Yep, that's right, but just to confirm again, we're talking about Sky TV here and the Sky digibox. Nothing to do with broadband or internet provision.

Kevin, does that mean, you don't really have to have a BT landline at all?,

Hi Léonie. .

The updates don't arrive by the telephone cable, they're transmitted direct to the Sky box via satellite. The telephone cable is only used to send information to Sky such as booking movies or buying online, etc. The booking of movies can be done over the phone rather than by the remote but be sure to mention that you're visually impaired as I believe it's still free.

Just to reiterrate, I've had a Sky box of some description for around 15 years now and have never bothered to connect up with a telephone cable so you really don't need it unless you're going to play games, order goods online through the TV shopping service or book movies via the remote.

Regards.

Sam,

I don't know if the line has to be BT, but the reason Sky needs a
phone line is to upload information from your box. For example, if you book a pay per view movie, the information is transmitted back to Sky using your
phone line.

I think software updates to your box may also be dealt with via the
phone line, but can't be sure. Usually, only broadcast signals and data are transmitted to you via the satellite, the phone line completes the circuit
from you back to Sky.

Léonie.

Hi Chris.

Just to clarify, Sky do provide a line rental should you wish to switch from

your BT line rental. However, I'm not sure the question was just around having access to a landline to be able to use certain functions of Sky TV such as ordering movies and the like to which the answer is, no, you don't need to be hooked up to a telephone line at all as long as you don't want to

use those features..

Hi, I think it's because unlike Virgin Media, for example, Sky doesn't provide any kind of line rental, nor does it provide cable services, so I
guess one way around this is to require users signing up to their
broadband service that a BT line is necessary. I know there's Virgin Media

and other companies offering their own line rental, but it must be a
fierce competition out there, and since 90 odd percent of us are on BT,
Sky might as well use the most common denominator. Hope this helps.
