Thanks for the tip about Wannadoo. They offer a number of nice packages, so
I was about to sign up with them. I will now take a further look at PlusNet,
though they'd have to do Helensburgh in the firth of clyde.
24 pounds I suppose isn't so bad, but I do take care of

In a word yes! Basically you are currently on the static IP address of
80.229.142.25. This means that if someone wanted to contact your machine
directly on the Internet, they use this IP address. This is grate for
running servers etc on the system. However, with a dynamic IP address, you
get a different number each time you connect. If you aren't running servers
don't worry about it.
The only other difference which may effect you on the lower package is there
is a higher contention ratio - that is, you share the router you connect to
with several other people on the system. On the £21.99 package a month you
share with 30 other people, and with the £14.99 a month unlimited you share
with 50 other people, however, I have been on several such packages, and
they are fine and I don't think you would noticwe much difference in speed.

Andrew, thanks - I still don't know what static IP is! They're still
charging me 24.99! I don't use any extra email addresses that they offered,
I just serf the web, listening to audio streams, and downloading, as well as
using OE for email. I have no restriction on how much I download per month,
so could I still do all the above for their £14.99 per month?

Definately! The £24.99 I think was the older package which they have now
changed to a newer package. I think the package you are on currently is now
£21.99 a month, and if you did not use the features like static IP, the
larger webspace etc you could move down to £14.99 a month.

Andrew - I'm with Plusnet, paying 24.95 per month; I'd like to stay with
them, but am wondering what I'd be giving up, if I went with their 14.95
package--I don't understand things like static IP, and you referred to other
services that the more expensive packages provide, so I'm not sure what I'm
getting for the higher price, and if I really need all that stuff. If you
could explain the difference I for one would really appreciate it, as it
would be great to save some dosh on this one:]

Telewest only works if you ahve cable in your area. As i say Plusnet do an
unlimited package for £14.99 if you don't want other services like static IP
etc.

I use Andrews and Arnauld, http://www.aaisp.net.uk, but they are more of a
business ISP really, and give more features in the way of IP addresses and
tunnels etc, and most people aren't heavy downloaders.
I really wouldn't use Wanadoo, as everyone who has used them that I know of
has had problems with their phone support, and I had real problems setting
up one of their wireless packs for someone.
One other thing that people do if they are heavy downloaders is go with AOL
(I don't know how much the broadband is, but they go with the simple package
which doesn't give them many extra AOL features), and then use a router to
allow them to connect without the rubbish software.

Thanks for that info. I have logged onto the plusnet site. They are
adequate, I suppose, but I still didn't like the fact that you are limited.
I also checked into Freeserve and, again, found that you are limited. Then I
came across Telewest and was very surprised. I liked them a lot. They
offered TV services, telephone services, and, hooray, unlimited broadband at
a very resonable price. Unfortunately, they didn't cover Helensburgh on the
firth of Clyde. I then checked on Virgin, which possibly does do
Helensburgh, but they too limit the user. I'm used to 10MB download speed
and no limit, so I might find being limited quite restrictive. At the moment
it looks like Freeserve, the wana do people will get my phone call later
next week. And what is this... Wanna do, anyway. Are they Australian? Some
kind of cross between a wallaby and a kangaroo?
