Morning Richard

Okay, a couple of things. Firstly, I have no partiality towards any one
particular product or service or any company whose products I promote. I base
my comments, reviews and opinions solely on my personal experience, and my
experience has taught me that the Navigator despite it shortcomings is a very
useful and effective tool given the limited scope of its functionality. Okay,
the limitation as you put it is quite glaring, however Sendero products as a
rule do have this kind of functionality. It's just that the Navigator App was
specifically designed to be simple and straightforward. For anyone to use and
serve a given purpose. That is not to say that there will not be improvements
in the future, I would love to see a free mode which allows you to plan routes
between two points of interest you designate, specifically as you say in your
example, you spent some time at a caravan park. The same concept could apply
equally to a college campus or workplace campus. Anyway, I fee
l
for me it is value for money and money well spent. I have got BlindSquare on
my phone, but to be honest with you I have never been able to get on with it.
I'm not sure why, I can't put my finger on exactly what I don't like about the
app but it remains seldom used on my phone. I also have Ariadne which I used to
use in combination with NAVIGON and although this provided me with an adequate
level of navigation, I do still feel that the Navigator app puts everything in
one place and at my fingertips more effectively. There's nothing like healthy
debate and opinion though, so if you want to, I would love to hear how you get
on with using BlindSquare. And any other products, there is no bias and I will
try most things at least once.

All the very best, Ibrahim.

Sanctimoneous? I have trouble spelling it, let alone understanding it! :)
I understand that this is of course your opinion and your point about
developers having the confidence to develop such tools in the first
place is a very valid one. However, with respect, it's sometimes a
little unclear on such lists to know whose opinions and experiences
are completely impartial. It does seem to me that some guys here do
have a vested interest in some of the products and services that they
are promoting, and that is fine, as long as that is clear. In relation
to the Navigator app, The biggest disappointment that I have with it
is that it doesn't have the ability (yet) to tag your own points of
interest, such as the "my places" function that Blind Square does. For
example, we recently spent a week in Cornwall on a holiday park that
we had never stayed at before, where this feature proved invaluable to
me. It allowed me to tag the shower block, shop, clubhouse and, the
caravan. This allowed me for the first time to navigate independently
in a totally alien area quite safely and accurately, having had the
sighted assistance to do this in the first place. In my view this is a
serious failing with the navigator app and should be considered for a
future upgrade?

Just my personal opinion mind.

Hi.

BlindSquare with extras? An interesting way of putting it. I use the RNIB
Navigator app for three reasons. Firstly, if you purchase a three year
subscription it works out at about £30 a year, not at all unreasonable given
the specialist nature of the app. Secondly, everything is under one roof,
all the tools you need to navigate successfully, safely and reliably. I have
spent some years using the free/multi App approach and although it has its
benefits, I preferred the simplicity of it all in one. Finally, if we are to
seriously encourage developers to consider GPS as a serious tool for
blind/partially sighted users, it is worth investing in the tools and giving
developers the confidence to realise that there is a market for blind users.
I'm confident that apps like RNIB Navigator will only get better with time
however we need to ensure that we tell developers how much we appreciate the
work that they do by buying the product so that they have encouragement to
develop it fur
ther. I don't mean to sound sanctimonious, this is just my opinion.

I like Google maps and this can also be run in conjunction with blind
square or on its own. RNIBS Navigator app sounds good but I am not
prepared to pay £6.99 per month for a nap that is effectively BlindSquare
with extras

Hi all.

I am looking for a GPS satnav app for my iPhone for a Geocaching event
I am
taking part in. Although it's initially for this, I want one that will
be
more broadly useable in the future for general travel.

The obvious app that springs to mind is TomTom, but are there any
others
better suited to the totally blind and the iPhone with voiceover?
