Hello there, I trust this message finds you well and that you have had a pleasant weekend. Thank you very much for your comment. I think perhaps there is a misunderstanding in the interpretation of the term I used, and I of course apologise for any confusion this may have caused. You are of course correct in that TalkBack is built into the android operating system. What I meant by add-on (and again I apologise if I used a confusing term), is deaf structurally Voiceover on iOS has deeper hooks into the operating system and in all areas compared to TalkBack on Android. This is why there are few if any Apple-developed areas of the operating system that are inaccessible (maps is the only one that currently springs to mind and even then inaccessibility is partial). On the other hand, in terms of code TalkBack does not have the same level of hooks into all parts of the operating system which is why accessibility using it is patchy. This is also why, for example, you cannot disable TalkBack and re-enable it with a gesture as you can with Voiceover, and why therefore sighted assistance is necessary to re-enable TalkBack or accessibility once it has been disabled. The latter is of course an important consideration for anyone using android who does not have sighted support (unless of course you are never going to turn off accessibility or prefer to use the device as-is without tinkering). Having said that, let us not cause unnecessary concern in that even though I refer to TalkBack as an add-on, it is a work in progress and accessibility will only improve as the android operating system develops, and I would certainly expect major improvements in android 5 when it is released later this year. I hope this clarifies any misunderstanding. Remember that when discussing technology different people do use different terms even though they intend the same meaning. This is a fact of life in the multilingual nature of our world. All the best for now and take care. Please note: this message was dictated using Dragon NaturallySpeaking and NovaTalk. Talkback is built in and can easily be switched on in Settings/Accessibility. How is this an add-on? You don't download it, it is just there. Having used both these phones, and knowing that accessibility is often a major source of debate, I'll just speak from my own experience, but also bear in mind I'd consider myself an expert user. The iPhone is still the best phone for accessibility including for blind users when compared to the Samsung. This is primarily due to the fact that accessibility is built into the phone's operating system from the ground up. With the Samsung, it's an add-on, and although very good it does have some holes. the iPhone could be more expensive depending on how and where you buy it, but I think for someone new to touch screens and who is totally blind it's the better option. I myself have now sold my iPhone and use the Samsung Galaxy S4 full time. I have done extensive testing in 'blind mode' - that is, putting a black cover over the screen to simulate having no sight, and I'm impressed. Then again, as I said I consider myself an expert user so can work things out if I were to get stuck. Hope this helps, and do feel free to ask more questions re: the Galaxy if you wish. All the best for now and take care. _______________________________________ Have a pleasant day, Kind Regards and Best Wishes, Hussein Patwa Tel: 0789 47 595 62 (UK) Tel: +44 (0)122 4433 954 (SIP) Twitter: www.twitter.com/hussein_patwa Skype: patwaspotterfan2 Web: www.patwanet.co.uk Blog: http://patwaspotterfan.livejournal.com Dolphin Certified SuperNova Trainer Find me on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=510013486 Please note: Calls from witheld numbers may not be connected. I currently use a Nokia C5, which has done me proud and I have really liked it. However, I have now been told that the screen has just about had it and I feel that it should be replaced. Yes, I am aware that these can still be purchased and then TALKS can be transferred across to it, which would cost something over £210. I also feel that would be continuing on a dead line of technology and it might be better to move to something more modern, although at a greater price. It seems clear that the two outstanding competing offers at the moment are the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the I-Phone 5. I am a little uncomfortable about using a touch phone, is this really as easy as it may appear from the e-mails on this list? From a blind person's perspective, which is the better of the two to go for? I cannot help here too much with my requirement as I currently do not have a smart phone and therefore do not know which features I would want to use. Clearly, I want to make phone calls and handle text messages. Additionally it might be good to have proper access to the internet etc. I do not know if I would want to go as far as e=-mails, simply due to the number I get daily from the various lists I am a member of which currently get filtered off into various folders in Outlook on my PC. Any personal experience in using such phones would be a good help for me in deciding which way to go. Many thanks in advance.
