Hi John,

You might want to try some of the podcasts produced by Vision Australia.
Take a look at
http://www.visionaustralia.org/living-with-low-vision/learning-to-live-indep
endently/using-technology-and-computers/help-yourself!-technology-podcasts-a
nd-resources/smartphones-tablets-and-apple-ios-devices

Navigate to the Apple iOS heading. The first few podcasts are generic, the
remainder are specific to different versions of iOS.

If the podcasts aren't to your liking, you could buy a book called "Getting
Started with the iPhone; An Introduction for iPhone Users" by Anna Dresner
and Dean Martineau.

RNIB sell this in DAISY format but I recommend you get it from National
Braille Press as they sell a more up-to-date edition and you can download it
instantly after purchase in MS Word format.

Hope that helps.

Ed

Hello again list.

Last Monday I took the plunge and bought an IPhone 5.

Unfortunately, I am still struggling with getting navigation on it to work
in a consistent manner. E.G. Moving up and down a multiple screen page seems
inconsistent, I am never sure exactly where I should slide, in which
directing nd with how many fingers at any one time to achieve a given
result.

I would appreciate a pointer to a step by step guide to the basic functions,
from the point of view of an absolute beginner who can only use touch and
audible feedback.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards, John.

Hi John

I use the iPhone 5, having upgraded from the Nokia C5 about seven months
ago. Now I have done it, I am glad as I use the iPhone for calls, text
messages, apps, and now Twitter as well.

But my son was here last week for our wedding, and he had his Galaxy S2 with
him. I hadn't played around with one of these before, so I asked him to
turn Talkback on so we could mess around with it for a while.

This is just a personal view, but I prefer iOS simply because I have got
used to it. But the two things I liked about Ian's Galaxy S2 were the sound
and the Google voice. I think the speech on Android is excellent, and more
preferable to Daniel I have to say.

Navigating these things is similar, give or take a few gestures. While the
S2 is probably no longer available, it was good to have a play with a Galaxy
model.

Good luck.

Kind regards,

Subject: [access-uk] Samsung Galaxy or I-Phone 5

Hello list,

I must apologise in advance, I have seen many subject lines similar to mine
here, but at the time I had no interest in changing my phone and so did not
follow those threads.

I currently use a Nokia C5, which has done me proud and I have really liked
it. However, I have now been told that the screen has just about had it and
I feel that it should be replaced.

Yes, I am aware that these can still be purchased and then TALKS can be
transferred across to it, which would cost something over £210. I also feel
that would be continuing on a dead line of technology and it might be better
to move to something more modern, although at a greater price.

It seems clear that the two outstanding competing offers at the moment are
the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the I-Phone 5.

I am a little uncomfortable about using a touch phone, is this really as
easy as it may appear from the e-mails on this list?

From a blind person's perspective, which is the better of the two to go for?

I cannot help here too much with my requirement as I currently do not have a
smart phone and therefore do not know which features I would want to use.

Clearly, I want to make phone calls and handle text messages.
Additionally it might be good to have proper access to the internet etc.
I do not know if I would want to go as far as e=-mails, simply due to the
number I get daily from the various lists I am a member of which currently
get filtered off into various folders in Outlook on my PC.

Any personal experience in using such phones would be a good help for me in
deciding which way to go.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards, John.
