I think it's so that you can have your favourite programmes across all devices.

The sTV site worked well, until one day when I too found I had to log in.
The problems was that it asked you for a post code but try as I might, I
couldn't find an edit field to enter a post code.
Even the ITV app now asks you to log and sign in and I am somewhat baffled
as to why this is.
