David

The cassette recorder was not plugged into a port. It just had its power
lead.

The label printer is plugged into a USB port on the back of my PC.

Wendy:
A further question.

What sort of ports were the two devices plugged into?

David

I actually removed a small cassette recorder, as I decided to give it away.
Then I plugged in my new Brother label printer.

I have spent quite a while round the back trying to sort out wires, but no
luck so far. I even swapped some plugs over. I have everything on a
workstation, and the plugs are all in one of those surge protected socket
sets.

I can't move the speakers away from the monitor, as they all stand on the
top narrow shelf of the workstation, and wouldn't go easily anywhere else.
The thing is that when I first got the speakers they hummed a bit, but for a
long while now they haven't hummed at all so I am a bit disappointed that
they are doing so now.

In addition to suggestions of others, the additional plugged in item may
also cause a problem through what is termed an 'earth loop'.

Have the other suggestions worked?
If not let us know what peripherals you have plugged into your machine, in
particular the one which was plugged in and seemingly caused the hum.

Friends

I have just moved my PC workstation to plug something in at the back, and
when I next turned it on my speakers were humming. I have tried jiggling
things around again, but still humming. Anyone any ideas why this happens?
I'm sure it must be something to do with all those wires.
