Hi, No isps can do rate charging on a new connection now, simple as that. However I think Wanadoo should charge per rate limit. Its all too convenient for them to suggest it isn't their fault. Peter From beautiful Helensburgh on the Firth of Clyde. BT use the same charge depending on whether the connection is at 8mb, 2mb, or 512k. The actual speed you connect at should be shown in the dialup logs of your router or in the statistics. There is also very complex rate limiting that goes on within the BT network, whereby if you connect at a higher speed then the connection is not stable they will rate limit you to a lower speed (especially if using a Max DSL product). Usually the ISP does not have control of this, but it helps if you have a friendly ISP to talk to, that doesn't use an Indian call centre etc. Sometimes one way of making the connection faster is to switch interleaving on, which can speed up some file downloads but can slow down some streaming content, but not significantly so.
