I know a blind lawyer. He just doesn't care. He never did learn to sign his name. He is the only blind person I know who is not ashamed to sign with an x. He is a successful lawyer. So, I suppose he figures it doesn't matter. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eleanor Burke" <eleanorburke@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

I agree Peter though I did learn at the age of 10 to write mine. As my vision deteriorated so did my signature. Thing is I feel it is good to be asked to sign rather than those days when people wanted to put an x there because the person could not write their name. It is this notjion of illetercy that I did not like, it wasn't an inability to write but an inability to see what one is writing. Ibrahim made a very interesting point which I thought related to me only, the ability to hold a pen correctly. I was shown so many times as a child but it all felt very awkward and if I held it like a sighted person then I would not have a hope of writing anything. Strange that, we learn to use a knife and fork in the same way as sighted people, or do we!? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Beasley" <pjbeasley@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

I hate signing anything. I couldn't sign at all until I went on my second stay at RNIB'S Mannor House Torquay in 1989 When I was taught. My signature is s different each time, and I have difficulty making it small. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eleanor Burke" <eleanorburke@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

I wonder would the signature guide help in this regard. At least someone can put it n the place where the signature goes. Trouble I find is making of keeping the signature small enough. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ibrahim Gucukoglu" <ibrahim_gucukoglu@xxxxxxxx>

Hi Richard.

Fair enough, sound advice but my wife's bank is happy to allow her to use her stamp, however I'm not privy to the importance of the documents she's allowed to sign with it as we keep our banking arrangements totally separate *smile*.

All the best and thanks again for your input.

As a solicitor, I wouldn't advise using a stamp for important docs. This is
because,
1. The risk of misuse by a third party is greater; and
2. even if banks and so on are prepared to accept use of a stamp, they
usually require you to give an indemnity - which would make you responsible
even if the stamp were used by a third party without your consent.

I think it's slightly different at work, where I used a stamp for signing
quite a lot of stuff, but I knew that I was not likely to incur any
liability by doing so.

Hi Richard.

Why not? My wife uses hers all the time for doing important banking forms, even for signing work related paperwork. Its your signature after all, the
stamp is custom made and can easily be refilled with ink.

Carol, Most stationery shops do them. OK for letters, but I shouldn't
use them for signing important docs.
