do any other companies do this?

hello richard,
i should have given you more details about the app.
it isn't for you to take meter readings, it does much more than that.
it automatically knows how much you are paying per unit for both gas and
electricity if you have both from british gas, you can look at either by
themselves or both together.
and if for example you are looking at the electricity usage by default it will
be showing you the figures for today.
it tells you how much it thinks you will use based on previous usage during
that 24 hours, it shows you how much you have used so far today and it also
shows you how much you are using in realtime.
it shows you this as kilowatts per hour and pence per hour and is updated every
few seconds so if you just had the television on plus the things that are on
all the time it might say your using 4 pence per hour but if you then turn the
oven on to cook something within a couple of seconds it will show you that your
using more than 20 pence per hour.
this is really useful as you can tell exactly how much it costs to run any
appliance just by turning that individual product on for a short while and then
turn it back off again.
you get the same sort of readings for gas on another screen and you can look
back on past days to see what you used previously.
over time it can learn your power usage pattern and start making
recommendations to you to enable you to make savings.

hello richard,
yes there is an IOS app for the british gas smart meters.
we had both gas and electricity smart meters fitted last spring and were very
lucky as up until then there was only a wireless display fitted in your home,
but when the engineers arrived they said to us as of yesterday there is a
newmethod of accessing your readings we can now fit a mini router instead of a
wireless display that will transmit everything to your apple devices and that
if we would prefer to have that they would install that instead although they
admitted we would be their guineapigs.
we had the router installed and there was some minor problems getting it
installed but that was because they had never installed one before.
once up and running it has worked fine apart from one update to the app which
caused everyone to uninstall the app and re-install it again to get things
working again, but from an accessibility prospective it all works nicely with
voiceover.

Im trying to ascertain whether there is an iOs app to allow blind people
to obtain readings from gas/electricity meters, and, if so, whether meters
issued by any particular company are more usable than others.
Ive been offered a meter from British Gas.
