Hi Peter

Well done.  There comes a time when you just have to stand up and be
counted, tiresome though it can be.

Kind regards,

It can become a waste of one's life taking on every battle. However, the
hypocrisy of Santander in refusing to provide internet log-on details etc.
in an accessible format was something I couldn't let pass. In the end I
contacted the Financial Ombudsman who forced them to accept me on to their
"select" service which enables me to get almost anything done via the
telephone without using the internet.

Peter

Santander maintained until the end that their systems did not enable the
distribution of such details in braille.

Importance: High

I would find that completely unacceptable, although in fairness, I do think
banks/credit card companies could do a lot more to help us out as well.
I mean on the one hand, we always hear them going on about keeping one's
details to one's self, but then, when we contact them to ask for our card
details in accessible formats, all too often the first thing we get, is the
old, "can't you just get someone to read them for you?" rubbish, which
directly contradicts all of the stuff they put out about keeping your
details to yourself.
and now they are pushing out these inaccessible touch screen pin devices,
again, preventing us from being able to keep our pin to ourselves.

Hi,

But you still had to give someone else your Pin, even if you trusted them.
That bothers me.

The shock of seeing all those card payments made over a bar on my bank
statement would be too much.  At least if I pay cash it's done with and I
forget it.  There has to be the option for whichever way people want to pay.

When I was presented with an IPad to pay for my daughter's horse riding
lesson I was quite surprised and luckily I had someone with me who could put
in my number or I wouldn't have had a choice but to ask them to do it for
me.  It would be a serious hassle to get them to put voice over on and
anyway I didn't have headphones with me and people waiting behind me would
have probably started shuffling about and sying and then I'd get in a flap
lol!!

Hi, A comment of general thought, not about disabled people, but pertinent
to your note below.
Card payments are used very frequently in pubs these days.
I admit though, that it is generally by the younger clientele of the pubs.

Regards, John.

I must say I do like to have some cash on me.  Some cab drivers don't take
cards and who wants to use a card for a drink in a pub?

Hi Jackie,

What an old-fashioned notion, cash. <Big Smile>.

Seriously, I can't wait to get rid of cash, it's the least secure method of
carrying money.

I carry less and less of it about nowadays, I love Android Pay.

Iain,

That is correct, the speech is silenced, audible clicks are still there and
the screen curtain provides privacy.

That turns speech off but leaves VoiceOver still running. The screen Curtain
is a function of VoiceOver.

Not practical

For example, on older touch screen devices, you could use ordinary
headphones.
On more recent ones, they have a bespoke connector

This is an issue I came across some time ago in a local take out.  I
told them the problems, and gave them advice.  we came to an
arrangement about payment with an app the shop used, they refunded me
the standing charge for the app if I used that to place order, as the
app
was accessible.

Hello all,

First, please excuse the cross-posting. I apologise in advance,
especially to those who may receive this message three times, once per
list. However, I and a number of others feel this is an important
enough
issue to warrant it.

It has come to the attention of members of another list, that some
restaurants and shops are no longer offering chip and PIN machines
when the time comes to pay the bill. Instead, people are being
presented with an IPad belonging to the service provider organisation,
and are expected to type their PIN in on a silent, flat touchscreen.
In one case reported, the customer felt they had no alternative but to
divulge their PIN number to a member of staff. I've seen this in my
mobile phone service provider outlet in town. Has anyone here ever
been embarrassed or frustrated when given an inaccessible piece of
technology through which to make their payments? The people on the
other
list (New College Worcester Former Students'
Association) would like to get an idea of the scale of this problem,
and suggestions as to how it could be resolved, so that they can bring
the issue into the light and campaign for change. Yes, I know that
IPads are accessible, but you wouldn't want to turn voiceover on, on
someone else's IPad in an open plan restaurant, and have it announce
your personal details to the world at large as you type. At my Phone
Supplier shop, they suggested turning speech on and playing my input
back through the shop's Public Address system!

Best,

Clive
