Jim, I had a strange happenings like that, too, once. And then I launched skype and went through its initial sound test via this skype sound test service. I believe skype looked for a sound card, initialized it and Skype was good to go. Funny thing was...Goldwave was good to go, too. Goldwave with Windows Vista used to be a nightmare for me.
