Hi John,
I am running 8.1 and Narrator is working fully in notepad but does nothing
for Outlook, can't read the subject line or the body of the text. Don't know
about html.

I've now got Win 8.0 installed but had to get someone round to do this. It
was completely impossible without sighted help. The copy I have comes up
wanting you to answer numerous questions before any screenreader or Narrator
can be loaded.

Additionally, after full installation,  even the experienced computer
software engineer I got to do this found it hard to get Narrator working!

However, it's all up and running now but, as many people have said, the new
version of Narrator (except for the much better English voice) is no
screanreader in the real sense. 
It cannot read/review even text typed into Notepad! Nor can it read what is
displayed on HTML pages, other than being able to tab through the various
elements on the page!

Do you know if Win 8.1 is any better as far as Narrator is concerned?

Hi John,

It's possible you have the speaker cable in the wrong socket and this is why
you are getting no sounds.
Try plugging the speaker cable in the front of the computer where you
usually just have the mic and speaker connections.
On all the computers i've got the speaker socket is the one at the left or
top if they're mounted verticaly.
The Windows key U starts the Ease of access centre and the Windows key and
Enter key starts Narrator.
If all this fails, have you thought of using NVDA on a pen drive, with a USB
sound card at the ready if needed.

I don't think you're in safe mode, i'm sure it's just the registration
screen, and once you get past that it will load to the start screen.
