Have you been able to see, Karl? When did you learn to write your signature?

For many of us, even if we learned earlier, over time this is more difficult and I would have hoped you'd appreciate that, even if you can write yours with no problem at all! I can't even get pens always to work for me when they work for others, because of the way I hold them. To try to hold them properly for writing was just awful and I felt I had no control as I attempted to make the shape of the letters!

Whilst my husband can sign reasonably quickly and doesn't mind it, still his signature is not that readable at all. Neither of us have had sight, though he used the Optacon for many years, so maybe this helped him in forming the shapes.

Incidentally, there are also a number of people with sight who cannot sign for one reason and another, and I see no reason why we shouldn't make life simpler for ourselves! <Smiles>

Hi,

I must be missing something here, but what is the problem
with signing
things as a blind person? I've never thought it was a
problem, just ask
someone to put the pen on the paper and away you go...

Cheers
Karl

I will often let people sign on my behalf for example,
when they come to do
my annual gas service.

Hi,

Oh how I wish I'd thought of this when I was at
University! Even my mum uses one and she's not visually
impaired. I used to have to sign things at least 20
times a week and it was getting to be a real bother.
Like Eleanor,
I would accept people signing on my behalf but I would
not like it. It's that loss of independence for
something so simple (compared to other things)
and in legal terms unless it's set up properly you also
have that loss of control.

How something so simple can make such a big difference!
Oh well, something
to bear in mind for the future.

I agree Peter though I did learn at the age of 10 to
write mine. As my vision deteriorated so did my
signature. Thing is I feel it is good to be
asked to sign rather than those days when people wanted
to put an x there
because the person could not write their name. It is
this notjion of illetercy that I did not like, it
wasn't an inability to write but an inability to see
what one is writing. Ibrahim made a very interesting
point
which I thought related to me only, the ability to hold
a pen correctly. I
was shown so many times as a child but it all felt very
awkward and if I
held it like a sighted person then I would not have a
hope of writing anything. Strange that, we learn to
use a knife and fork in the same way as
sighted people, or do we!?
