Hi Clive,

This is fine. For those who have Microsoft Outlook 2013, press the Alt key,
then O, the T, then P while composing a message. This will convert it to
plain text.

All the best

Steve

Subject: [access-uk] RNIB Product Boycott (re-send)

Hello all, especially Derek,

Google has just tought me how I should be able to re-format individual
messages into plain text. So I'm re-sending as plain text. Please can anyone
who received my last message on RNIB Product as a blank, let me know whether
this one comes through with readable text, or whether it still seems blank.

Best,
Clive

Thanks,
Clive
Hello,

I find the idea disturbing, that blind people would be expected to raise
funds on the street for free, while sighted people would be paid for doing
the same thing. Is this not discrimination? There is a gratitude attitude
coming in here, I think, similar to the one in which some local societies
have blind volunteers and sighted employees sitting next to each other doing
exactly the same thing.

I also feel some disquiet at the RNIB's preoccupation with sight loss. This
doesn't mean I don't believe newly-blind people should get the support they
need and deserve. It means that I wonder how, if so many services related to
blindness but neither to sight loss prevention, nor to support for people
when they lose their sight are allowed to atrophy, what are the prospects
for blind people one or two years after initial sight loss, when they're
getting to grips with issues like: "Where can I find a watch or a washing
machine I can use" and the answers they receive are vague or blatantly
negative": "unfortunately we don't have anyone here who can help you any
more".

Best,
Clive

Hi,

I'll keep this short as it is not the proper list to express these thoughts.

It infuriates me as many organisations like us to remain dependant, as it
keeps them in work... Also another pet gripe is organisations having VI
people out collecting in public areas, which is a bit like emotional
blackmail, yet pay fund raisers £30K+ per year as an employed staff member.

Rant over.

Mike

well personally I do not think you should be telling them in accurate
information I am of the opinion if you are going to have conversation about
your dog with the public you should be educating them.

rights and now they come out with something like this. the public are very
gullable and believe all this rubbish.

in sheffield people used to ask me how i got on the right bus and i told
them the dog could read the numbers and you know they believed it.

Hi John

I just despair of these people and you are right you tell guide dogs
things and no notice is taken whatsoever because totally blind people
are in a minority they are just left on the shelf to disappear.

parttly sighted she kept asking it just felt as though i had landed from
outer space.

Hi Ian

I don't know if you read this newspaper but last week in the daily
mirror there was an article about an American woman who wanted to go
blind which infuriated me about as much as what you have written
has. There was also an advert about fifteen years ago done by
action for blind people that made us look totally helpless which
annoyed me as well. I don't buy the rnib's products as I think they
are poor quality most of the time. and when my year's subscription
is up I don't think I will renew it either.

Janet ps there are still letters at the bottom of your messages.

I am seriously considering boycotting what few RNIB products and
services I use - chiefly the electronic newspaper service - in
response to their latest ad campaign. There has been an item on
this at the end of today's edition of WATO. Celebs including
Barbara Windsor and Shirley Bassey are presented talking about the
idea of being told they're going blind. Bassey describes that
possibility as being "Devastating" and says she might as well be
told that she's going to die. Once again they have turned my
impairment into a thing of terror and me into an object of pity and
