[access-uk] Re: RNIB Overdrive subscription

I'm trying out the one-month free trial offer.

It looks as though the 64kb bitrate is a limit placed by OverDrive itself. I
used the PC Console to download a book from Glasgow Libraries and it's the
same. It's a pity it's not higher but it's listenable.

I found the PC Console surprisingly accessible and easy to use. It's really
great being able to transfer books to a portable device.

The OverDrive App was confusing and kept freezing on my iPod Touch 5th Gen.
I'll try it on my iPhone later. So far I found it's more satisfying to zip
and transfer books via Dropbox into Voice Dream on my iPhone and listen that
way.

I found the OverDrive website doable, but I wish there were headings or even
a table for each book so it was more navigable. It's possible as a
work-around to use the Search Again function for the word "details" to find
each book fairly quickly while browsing and open it in a separate tab.

Overall, I much prefer having a download service to the CD-based Talking
Book Library which I used less and less.

John

Hello David,

Similar here in Norfolk; I think there are concessions for those with
particular financial needs. How much is the Overdrive subscription by the
way?

Thanks and cheers,

Mike

I have always had to pay for my own talking books, and also my bookstream
subscription and now the overdrive service.

Good luck to those who get their subscriptions paid for them by Local
Authorities, but I do not see why it should be the responsibility of RNIB to
arrange this. There is nothing to stop individuals taking up the matter
with their own Authorities. They might have more luck than RNIB are having.

I do find this post code lottery system rather strange though. Surely the
National Government should sponsor library services for the blind in the
same way they do for public libraries for the sighted.

And now I will retire gracefully and browse overdrive for some more books.

David
