I do a lot of personal, informal studying and research, and access to something
like RNIB Bookshare would be amazing, but I gather it is only available for
people actually enrolled in educational establishments? I suppose that
limitation is a crucial part of the deal with publishers.
I do regularly buy ebooks and audiobooks, but some can be just too expensive
for me.
I have used the US Bookshare in the past, but what I got from it at the time
was fairly limited in terms of what was actually available for the UK.
I am hoping the Marrakesh Treaty will change a lot of this, but it is I guess
going to be a long process. One perhaps complicated by in the UK the B- word
(Brexit ...)

Hello Iain
You're correct, DAISY is MP3 with some additional navigation. It's the
compression rate Overdrive use that makes the quality inferior.
No lack of transparency, we have discussed our plans to move platform on
lists before. We have had some contractual obligations that didn't allow us
to talk about it in the early days, but happy for it to be out in the open
now. We are planning wider communication to all our readers.
From what I understand the issue with publisher permission didn't surface
until after RNIB Overdrive was adopted and was specifically with using the
Overdrive platform. Early discussions with publishers indicate our adoption
of the new platform will overcome this issue. We are using the same platform
provider we use for our online education collection, RNIB Bookshare, where
publishers have provided close to 200,000 books to date.
We are adding a few titles to RNIB Overdrive each month, but not the volume
we had been adding.

Alison

As I understand it, Daisy books are MP3 files plus additional files which
allow for navigation depending on how the DAISY book is structured. What I
still cannot understand is why in the first place this Overdrive system was
adopted given that what it offered was undoubtedly inferior in so many
respects to what was being offered on the other library platforms. It is
also disappointing to discover that once again there has been a distinct lack
of transparency on the part of RNIB in that it has taken messages from this
list to bring about the giving of any information on this matter. I don't
recall seeing anything about this non-adding of Overdrive new titles in New
Books. Did I miss something? What we signed up for as Overdrive users was
access to the full RNIB Talking Books catalogue. At the time the system was
given to us, there was no mention that it would be less than that.

Hi
Yes, the books you can access through the EasyReader app are the same as on
RNIB Overdrive, which is not the full collection due to publisher
restrictions.
We are not adding many books to Overdrive at the moment. It is a time
consuming process to convert them and as Ibrahim says we will be moving to a
new platform shortly. We will be offering DAISY rather than MP3, so better
audio quality and no more file conversion to do. You'll still be able to
use the EasyReader app.
We are working on those publisher restrictions with the aim of offering the
full collection online and through the post.
More on the new platform soon. We'll be looking for customers to
participate in testing with the various operating systems and access tech
out there very shortly.

Thank you Alison,
Yes, I have recently added easyreader app to my ipad. I kind of assumed that
the RNIB books on it were just the same as on Overdrive and not the rest of
their library. Have I got that wrong? Must admit have not looked properly
so far.
Thanks

Thanks Ibrahim, for that. I had a suspicion something like that was
happening. I hope it comes with a good range of new books.
I only use Overdrive from RNIB. I have found USBs too fiddly and
unworkable for me.

Hi Michael.
As I understand things, RNIB is due to move over to a new platform
for
announcements will be made through RNIB's customer channels regarding this.
If you are in search of a particular title, you might like to give
the library services team a call who will be able to tell you which
titles are available from RNIB in which formats.

All the best, Ibrahim.
