I can assure you we did develop the Duo Comm from the ground up for the vi
market. I was the Product Manager who commissioned the work at the time. As
I mentioned in my previous post, originally for our own requirements as an
employer of VI staff.

I understand the concept of low-volume markets, the need for standards
compliance etc and the impact they have on product cost, having been
professionally involved in the field previously. But I doubt very much
whether either the RNIB or Duo-comm have developed this product from the
ground-up purely for the VI market. I might be wrong but I guess the
RNIB have simply sourced the box as a solution to a known problem. A
problem which brought me into the discussion in the first place, the
need on a daily frequency to be able to listen to callers telling me
stuff I need to type and reading stuff from my screen-reader to tell them.
Of course call-centre and support-line staff use this kind of kit every
day too. You can bet their kit is very sophisticated and very expensive
but you can also bet the little headsets they wear don't cost 150 quid.
They must get dropped, broken, sat-on or wear out all the time.
I know the RNIB have constraints but you only have to see the price they
charge for ONE CR2032 coin-cell and then look at how much a card of a
dozen of them will cost from Amazon to know they take advantage of
customers. In the case of the coin-cell they rely on the fact that your
average "little old lady who can't see" (not meant in any way in an
insulting fashion, but as a fact of life) does not know she can buy a
dozen from Amazon for less than the price of ONE from the RNIB. That
constitutes a rip-off in my world.

If it does not include an external sound-card device it's ridiculously
expensive at about £150 from the RNIB. I bet they are not paying nearly
that much for it.

Hello mike. No, it sounds like it has 2 inputs. The rj11 for your phone then
1 to connect to the 3.5mm jack of your pc. Then you have the output that the
provided headset or your headphones plug in to.
