John,

I work for the RNIB, but please don't take this as an official statement
because I'm replying in a personal capacity. As far as I'm aware, RNIB
describes itself as a charity, not as a not-for-profit organisation,

Here's a quote from the annual report and accounts 2008/2009: "RNIB is a
registered charity, and as such is entitled to certain tax exemptions on
income and profit from investments and surpluses on any trading
activities carried out in furtherance of the charity's primary
objectives, if these profits are applied solely for charitable
purposes."

A quick skim of the Charity Commission website and the Charity Act 2006
seems to suggest a not-for-profit organisation is not defined as an
organisation that does not make a profit, but one that uses any profit
it makes for "public benefit".

Steve

They are a non profit organisation. They are not allowed to sell for
profit.
That's it and all about it. It doesn't matter a damn if you think they
should be able to. Yes, they can make money from other sources, but not
by selling products for profit. Or do you think it's fine for them to do
whatever they want to get money?

I am in no way a RNIB fan boy but where do you think they get the moneys

required to run their educational establishments and other services?
Some funds undoubtedly come from the state by way of grants but not all
and
they have to raise the shortfall from other sources.

I can not say that I always agree with the way they spend the money they

raise, a lot of the tech projects are just a waste of time - who can
forget
the ill fated electronic newspaper debacle, and I believe that they are
too
top heavy in their management structure but that is another argument.
