Hi, well, yes your quite right of Course, Sorry, I just feel as a VI we have
spent most of our lives having to prove "We are equal to our sighted piers"
and maybe as a mum of 4 it could be I feel that more. Having both 2
youngsters with and 2 without an eye condition going through schools with
discrimination problems, the youngest (of 13 years old) being Home educated
due to teacher bullying.

I just feel the World is always looking out for the Bad and Sad points in VI
folks when they should be realizing we are Perfectly Normal, only without
vision.

I just Feel Sorry for these youngsters with all the problems and challenges
they have to face in their future lives and feel showing the public the
"Better side" of our disability is far better than what was filmed for the
TV show. Maybe its Me who has a problem? I would be quite prepared to
accept that!

christine, although I didn't see the program I spoke to a number of people
who did both blind and sighted. saying it was full of bad manners and foul
language is probably a bit on the prudish side. the program is of course
done largely for entertainment and seeing a load of 17 year olds studdying
is not, to be fair, particularly interesting TV. more time could be spent
perhaps looking at some of the technology students use as well as the
forward thinking inovations that teachers of subjects such as science need
to make in order to teach the students. Such programs however may be more
at home in the Open University programming if this still exists. the same
kind of thing applies to chess. it's just not stimulating unless you have a
knowledge of chess to have highlights on tv.

Cheers

Graham

I agree with you here Carol, My I think the programm was done for
entertainment and through the eyes of a tipical media reporter. Nothing
"Good" was promoted in the programm, fowl language, bad maners. Guess
Hannah wasn't in the programm as she's a different type of person, one who
wants to Achieve and Get on in life, Not quite how the media want to present
a VI person.

Hi Chris,

OK, we heard the documentary here, though there was no sight in the house to
confirm anything. There was the naration but, for some reason or other, we
didn't get the audio description on Cable. Anyway, after a while we
switched to digi-TV and got the audio which did improve things a little.

My honest view is that Channel 4 made a very poor programme, wasting a lot
of time and not getting sufficient background about courses and information
through to the public. As I wrote last night, I object greatly to that
phrase "Young blind things", as though they're a piece of rubbish! I know
it may be an expression that's very much "in" now, but I found it very
demeaning indeed to think of such folk in this way.

There were extra students around from time to time but of course I have no
knowledge as to whether one of them was Hannah. She was not mentioned by
name, so far as I can recall. Salina and Stacy were the prominent girls.

On a good note, I was pleased (and slightly amused) to discover that they at
least still use the word "Totals" at RNC. That sure took me back! (They
didn't mention "The dims and visions" though. Perhaps, in some ways, that's
as bad as the word "things", but we chose to call ourselves by those names
and that was the difference!

Well, forgive my rambles, Mr. Moderator. I'll get off the computer and come
back ready to keep good conduct tomorrow, promise!
