Hi, Catherine,

If this is a recent set of problems, maybe a System Restore back to a time when things were OK would be a good idea.

I'd do several other things, for what it's worth without being able to play with your PC.

Firstly it might be worth running CHKDSK (check disk). For this, you'd go to Start, Run, then when you're in the DOS or command prompt screen, enter this:-

CHKDSK C:

JAWS as far as I know still works in DOS so you should hear a progress report of what the program is doing.

It may well say you need to run it again with /F added to the command. If another program is running that hogs the hard disk, you might be as well to agree to CHKDSK running at your next startup. Reboot and let it do its thing. You might get some restored files at the end of it.

Something else you could do would be to reduce the number of programs that run when you start up, if that's possible. MSCONFIG will show what happens at startup time. If you know you don't desperately need something to run at startup, uncheck it. Again, sorry, it's a reboot to make the changes.

Run Disk Cleanup from Accessories/System Tools.

Defragment the drive.

Check for viruses, spyware, etc with whatever you've got.

Hopefully some of these things will improve matters. It's a good day's work sorting all those things out!

If things don't work out so well, you might have to re-install any damaged software.

Very best of uluck!

Subject: [access-uk] Problems at startup/scanning drive for consistency?

Hello all,

My computer keeps taking what seems like a long time to start up. Sometimes it seems to restart itself before starting JAWS/other programs that come on at startup.

A while ago I was having errors when I started up and got a program to clean the registry and that seemed to fix things. But now wondering whether there's another problem...

Today someone sighted told me (when it was taking ages to start up) that it said it was checking drive c for consistency, you may cancel this but it is strongly recommended you don't. I let it do its thing, then it restarted and all seemed fine. But strange things have happened:
1. A message came from JAWS saying JAWS had now been activated as if I'd only just activated it.
2. Two pieces of hardware I've already installed brought up the Found New Hardware Wizard, and looking in Control Panel these (a scanner and a USB TV stick) are no longer listed.

Suggestions?
