Sorry to reply to my own message yet again, but with pointer from someone in
a telephone conversation today, followed by some googling, I've come up with
a solution to my problem.
For anyone who gets into the same situation I suggest you take a look at the

I would also suggest however, that it looks as if the solution only works if
you have Outlook 2003 or higher, and the solution is different depending
whether you have Outlook 2003 or 2007.
