Have you checked the Avast website to see if it is compatible with Windows 8? It's not good installing software on a new os unless you are sure it is meant to work with that system, a good point in hand is Jaws doesn't support Windows 8 so chances are Avast might not do so either. Expecting people to know the answer to such a question is a bit unfair as you have to check out what the developer's specs are with the operating system you expect to run it on. No software will officially support W8 until the public beta is release at the end of the month. To me this is just a pure common sense approach to the problem.
