hello colin.

total recorder uses what is called a virtual sound driver. this is a sound card that is specific to total recorder. when you press record, this sound card comes to life and begins recording all streams that your system is playing. note i said your system, not your sound cards. it totally ignores what is being output via your sound cards. this in a nut shell is why its picking up everything. in windows XP, it was possible to set total recorder to record only a certain stream and exclude certain programs. but because of the changes microsoft have since made in windows7, total recorder now has to function differently. so when you have the software option selected, it will record all the software on your system that is outputting sound including jaws. it may be possible to enable stereo mix recording for your specific sound card and trying to force total recorder to use the stereo mix stream, but i'm not holding out much hope. the way you used to be able to do this and it may still work is the following.

go to control panel.
go in to sound.
control tab to the recording tab.
press applications in the list and click on show disabled devices.
find stereo mix for the sound card you want to use to playback the audio, it should say disabled. tab to properties.
tab to device usage and go up to use this device enable.
then click OK on all dialogues.
go in to total recorder and go to options recording source.
set your recording source to sound board, then to the relevant line i.e your preferred sound card then set the line to stereo mix. weather this works for you or not i'm not sure, but it used to. give it a try and let us know.

all the best,

Mo.
