Hi Henry,

Just to clarify your question 1, it is not the recordings that are poor 
quality, it is the scale of compression they use on the files.  Too much 
compression means lower quality sound.

However, I feel there are still two outstanding issues that the RNIB need to 
address:

1. why have the RNIB allowed books to be downloaded with poor quality 
recordings?  
2. why does it appear to be difficult to navigate titles?

Perhaps these concerns will be addressed at a later date?

Hi all,

A huge amount of research and work was done before RNIB Overdrive was trialled 
and then launched and we have a lot of customers who are using it currently - 
nearly 7,000 books have been borrowed from the service since 15 September. 

RNIB Overdrive was never launched to replace the Talking Books Service and our 
Daisy CD offering, but through demand, we wanted to launch a digital download 
library, to reach out and support more reading choices and give the public the 
option to pick the service that suited them. 

Sadly, the BookStream BookClub was not scalable and had a number of issues. 
OverDrive, the platform that we use, is in constant touch with us about 
improving their platform and the accessibility and have done a number of 
changes and are working on more.

We have had many people who have decided to transfer across to RNIB Overdrive 
from Talking Books Service - if you have decided that you would prefer to be 
transferred across to Talking Books Service instead and continue with Daisy 
CDs, then this can be arranged too - all you need to do is contact us and we 
can arrange that for you.

In regards to book prioritisation - to upload over 20,000+ titles to the 
service takes a while and we are working to get the complete catalogue up 
quickly. We analysed the different genres and uploaded cross sections, to 
ensure a variety of books were available. If we started prioritising titles 
from customers, this would slow the process down and would have an impact on 
all customers, who each would have different books that they would like.

We have a team who work tirelessly on this service and have a lot of plans to 
continue improving our offering and the books available, alongside our 
fundraising teams, who help us heavily subsidise all our reading choices. I can

Hi Carol,

I think their idea was to allow files to play on cheaper media players than 
Daisy players.  Of course, this idea is nonsense, because Daisy files will 
simply be ignored by cheaper media players, so they too would play just fine.

So bring back Daisy I say.

We feel the same way, Steve.  So many VI's have good Daisy players, allowing 
such great access, so why do we need anything different.  I wonder just how 
much longer they'll actually prepare Daisy books?
