Aha! After Christmas, when there's not much going on, I'll go and find one. What's this Option you mention?

How much are you able to do without sighted help and what do you use your Apple for every day? Finally, what doesn't work for you?

Absolutely, any Apple store!
All you need to do is walk up to a machine and type in ctrl plus option plus f5 and it will start speaking to you, ctrl plus option plus k will speak each key and tell you it's function. For example ctrl plus option plus a will tell you the keys and that that combination will read the whole screen.

It does not matter which model or type of box you try, be it the top of the range desk top or the budget portable it just works.

Here's a nice thing, one of the standard voices, Alex, breathes so sometimes you think, oh poor thing - he has been running to read out this message.

If you have an apple store in your area give it a go, no one will think it strange - that's the strange thing.

Gordon, know anywhere we can walk into a shop and get a demo, complete with the speech? Now I'm getting quite interested ...

I am sorry if my original response seemed flippant, it was really meant to be advisory. My point is that if you run a microsoft operating system with all it's inherent security flaws there is nothing you can do to guarantee no more malware.

these reason Apple operating systems have not been *popular* was for a long time a matter of cost for the sighted, apple being then a more expensive option, and the non availability of a truly accessible screen reader for the visually impaired. That's noto say that there wasn't a speech outpur available but it just wasn't up to the job. Tiger and Leopard version of OS10 for the mac has changed all that big time.

So in a nutshell, if you are contemplating a change of machine, its time to bring apple in to the equation when making your mind up, don't forget the screen reader is built in so there's no extra to pay and the little comes out of the box talking it's little heart out so if you are blind or sighted you are confronted with voic over as soon as you switch it on and the braille interface is there too.

I do not work for apple or have shares in the company, I just love this mac book!

Ok, well thanks for the info; I suspect it probably isn't as simple as that but don't want to get into that...the main point is at the moment I have a windows based machine and no money to spend on anything new (hence my question about it being a free solution)...some time in the future though I plane to investigate linux...

Oh yes, it's simple - do not use windows based browsers or mail clients.
An apple mac does not need any anti virus or malware protection.

Hi,

Is there any free way, through having appropriate internet options or anything else, of trying to prevent malware/spyware/ whatever you want to call it, being installed on my computer? I'm sure stuff gets put there, and every time I do a scan for adaware, spybot, advanced windows care or anything else they find and get rid of some. But is there any way of preventing it in the first place?
