Many thanks Ibrahim. I am glad you confirmed my thoughts and as he has a
birthday coming up I now know what to buy him. The headphones are not an
option as he finds it stops him hearing other sounds around him, such as
the phone or door bell. His options would be so much wider if only he
would admit his hearing loss and get hearing aids and then he could use
inductive couplers as I do but he is still in a state of denial as most
were when slowly losing their sight.

He could buy a pair of portables yes, and if they had an onboard
amplifier they would amplify the sound. Remember though that these
would need to be connected to the mains or powered by batteries. The
other option would be a pair of headphones. RNIB sell headphones
specifically for their daisy machine I believe but I don't know how good
they are. It just depends on how your friend want to enjoy his reading.

Hi All
A friend has a moderate hearing loss and finds his new RNIB Plextalk
book reading machine much quieter than his previous Victor Classic. He
is managing but has to have it very close to him.
I'm wondering if a set of portable speakers such as used with iPods and
MP3 players would be of any use to him. Of course they would need to
have an onboard pre-amp but I understand almost all now do have this
installed. Would the speakers amplify the maximum sound from the player
or only give the maximum the player is capable of producing?
