Hi,

I'm pretty sure that asking for your pin number is against the law. If
that happens and you tell the manager, you'll probably get free dinner
anyway.

Hi Jackie,

Quite so, and the solutions themselves have to be affordable. An alarming
number of blind and partially-sighted people out there don't have jobs, and
many of those don't have money to burn...and as has been said, the onus on
finding the solution is actually with the shop, not the customer.

Best,
Clive

Hi John

There are a lot of people for whom this particular scenario would be
impossible.  I know people who can't use Smart devices because of dexterity
issues, for example.  There are people who can't cope with touchscreen
technology, so what do they do?  It's ok to say you can make a big purchase
and download an app to do so, but it has to be concerning as this method
gets more popular, (frown).

Kind regards,

i wonder what would happen if this sort of thing happen to where one had to
get on a train or a bus because we cannot do it or some of us what would
happen then i still feel for some people it will be impossible for them to
do. noone seems to be fighting our cause now a days.

Hi Jackie,

What an old-fashioned notion, cash. <Big Smile>.

Seriously, I can't wait to get rid of cash, it's the least secure
method of carrying money.

I carry less and less of it about nowadays, I love Android Pay.

All the best

Steve

Or, better still, why not take some cash?

Iain,

That is correct, the speech is silenced, audible clicks are still
there and the screen curtain provides privacy.

That turns speech off but leaves VoiceOver still running. The screen
Curtain is a function of VoiceOver.

Hi,

Don't know how easy this would be, sometimes I turn voice over off
with a double triple tap, this keeps screen curtain on and you can
press the buttons if you listen for the "clicks" working from the
bottom up you can go up the center; 0 8 5 2 and locate the side

Mike

Not practical

For example, on older touch screen devices, you could use ordinary
headphones.
On more recent ones, they have a bespoke connector

Hi,

Would it be an idea to keep a set of earphones handy and ensure the
screen curtain is on when entering details?

Mike

This is an issue I came across some time ago in a local take out.  I
told them the problems, and gave them advice.  we came to an
arrangement about payment with an app the shop used, they refunded
me the standing charge for the app if I used that to place order, as
the app
was accessible.

Hello all,

First, please excuse the cross-posting. I apologise in advance,
especially to those who may receive this message three times, once
per list. However, I and a number of others feel this is an
important enough
issue to warrant it.

It has come to the attention of members of another list, that some
restaurants and shops are no longer offering chip and PIN machines
when the time comes to pay the bill. Instead, people are being
presented with an IPad belonging to the service provider
organisation, and are expected to type their PIN in on a silent,
flat
touchscreen.
In one case reported, the customer felt they had no alternative but
to divulge their PIN number to a member of staff. I've seen this in
my mobile phone service provider outlet in town. Has anyone here
ever been embarrassed or frustrated when given an inaccessible piece
of technology through which to make their payments? The people on
the other
list (New College Worcester Former Students'
Association) would like to get an idea of the scale of this problem,
and suggestions as to how it could be resolved, so that they can
bring the issue into the light and campaign for change. Yes, I know
that IPads are accessible, but you wouldn't want to turn voiceover
on, on someone else's IPad in an open plan restaurant, and have it
announce your personal details to the world at large as you type. At
my Phone Supplier shop, they suggested turning speech on and playing
my input back through the shop's Public Address system!

Best,

Clive
