Hi Simon

Then of course you have a predicament.  But think of all the people who
would be completely alienated if the only way to buy food in a restaurant,
or an item in a shop, would be with a touchscreen where a PIN was necessary.
I love tech myself so I'm not digging my heels in.  I am just concerned for
all those who just wouldn't be able to pay that way.  Anyone with some
common sense would realise that and surely have an alternative in place.

basically, because the only way I have of getting hold of it, is via
cashback, as there are no accessible machines that I know of, or that are
anywhere near where I go. the only places I go to that do cashback, are
pubs, you can only get a certain amount, generally £50 max, plus now that I
have young Lizzie to look after/take care of, I am trying to stay out of
pubs more anyway.

Why do you find getting cash such a pain?  I'm not being argumentative, I'm
genuinely interested in why you find cash more difficult than a touchscreen
that might be presented to you in a shop or restaurant where you have to
enter your PIN without sighted assistance.

So what happens when you come across someone with dexterity issues, or a
person who has never used, or feels uncomfortable with, Smart devices.  What
then?  It's ok to say what you might prefer, but what about other people?
Sure you can't please everyone all the time, but if we've all got to go into
shops and restaurants armed with a Smartphone that allows us to download an
app that then lets us pay for our goods or food, that is going to exempt a
lot of people for a whole bunch of reasons that have nothing to do with
being blind or partially sighted.

That turns speech off but leaves VoiceOver still running. The screen Curtain

For example, on older touch screen devices, you could use ordinary 
headphones.
On more recent ones, they have a bespoke connector

This is an issue I came across some time ago in a local take out.  I 
told them the problems, and gave them advice.  we came to an 
arrangement about payment with an app the shop used, they refunded me 
the standing charge for the app if I used that to place order, as the 
app
was accessible.

issue to warrant it.





It has come to the attention of members of another list, that some 
restaurants and shops are no longer offering chip and PIN machines 
when the time comes to pay the bill. Instead, people are being 
presented with an IPad belonging to the service provider organisation, 
and are expected to type their PIN in on a silent, flat touchscreen.
In one case reported, the customer felt they had no alternative but to 
divulge their PIN number to a member of staff. I've seen this in my 
mobile phone service provider outlet in town. Has anyone here ever 
been embarrassed or frustrated when given an inaccessible piece of 
technology through which to make their payments? The people on the 
other
list (New College Worcester Former Students'
Association) would like to get an idea of the scale of this problem, 
and suggestions as to how it could be resolved, so that they can bring 
the issue into the light and campaign for change. Yes, I know that 
IPads are accessible, but you wouldn't want to turn voiceover on, on 
someone else's IPad in an open plan restaurant, and have it announce 
your personal details to the world at large as you type. At my Phone 
Supplier shop, they suggested turning speech on and playing my input 
back through the shop's Public Address system!
