I'd hate to get rid of cash.  That would be ridiculous.  Imagine paying for
something that costs under a pound with a card.  I can just imagine going
into a sweet shop and letting kids get a 50p mix up and offering my card
lol!!!

That's what I'd do, I'd offer them a Paypal payment.

But I have Android Pay on my Pixel, Apple Pay on my iPhone, so I have
several ways to do it without cash.

Oh yes and contactless of course, where you don't need an app at all.
That's going to be the winner for me.

And Jackie, I hope you're wrong that cash isn't gone in your lifetime, I
certainly would be happy to get rid of it.

Hi Simon,

Could you offer to pay for it by using that app on your phone? It'd
strengthen any complaint against them if you have tried to meet them half
way and they haven't budged. On the other hand, you never know, they might
accept that as an alternative payment method, and then, job done.

fortunately, with the paypal app on my phone, if I am presented with an
extra, such as a farriers visit, I can make the paypal payment there and
then, so again, makes life so easy.

Yes, I usually do pay by paypal but I was at the stables with her and booked
her in again.  I just expected the usual card machine with the buttons as I
have never been presented with an IPad to pay anywhere else so I hope it
doesn't take off!!

The shock of seeing all those card payments made over a bar on my bank
statement would be too much.  At least if I pay cash it's done with and I
forget it.  There has to be the option for whichever way people want to pay.
When I was presented with an IPad to pay for my daughter's horse riding
lesson I was quite surprised and luckily I had someone with me who could put
in my number or I wouldn't have had a choice but to ask them to do it for
me.  It would be a serious hassle to get them to put voice over on and
anyway I didn't have headphones with me and people waiting behind me would
have probably started shuffling about and sying and then I'd get in a flap
lol!!

Card payments are used very frequently in pubs these days.
I admit though, that it is generally by the younger clientele of the pubs.

For example, on older touch screen devices, you could use ordinary
headphones.
On more recent ones, they have a bespoke connector

This is an issue I came across some time ago in a local take out.  I
told them the problems, and gave them advice.  we came to an
arrangement about payment with an app the shop used, they refunded me
the standing charge for the app if I used that to place order, as the

It has come to the attention of members of another list, that some
restaurants and shops are no longer offering chip and PIN machines
when the time comes to pay the bill. Instead, people are being
presented with an IPad belonging to the service provider organisation,
and are expected to type their PIN in on a silent, flat touchscreen.
In one case reported, the customer felt they had no alternative but to
divulge their PIN number to a member of staff. I've seen this in my
mobile phone service provider outlet in town. Has anyone here ever
been embarrassed or frustrated when given an inaccessible piece of
technology through which to make their payments? The people on the
other
list (New College Worcester Former Students'
Association) would like to get an idea of the scale of this problem,
and suggestions as to how it could be resolved, so that they can bring
the issue into the light and campaign for change. Yes, I know that
IPads are accessible, but you wouldn't want to turn voiceover on, on
someone else's IPad in an open plan restaurant, and have it announce
your personal details to the world at large as you type. At my Phone
Supplier shop, they suggested turning speech on and playing my input
back through the shop's Public Address system!
