My goodness! How did everyone manage before then? Yes people get mugged and
much worse, and it's just awful. But try saying cash should be outlawed to
someone with Parkinsons or MS or Motor Neurone diseases? Their independence
and quality of life is already so compromised, so add insult to injury by
taking away their basic right to buy food and whatever else by forcing them
to use something they never could? Sorry and all that, but there has to be
a middle ground for things like this, it can't all be about hugging your
Smartphone for every single thing you do in life!

I do look at the wider picture, but I don't think saying use cash is the
answer.

Nothing worse than going out for a meal with a hundred quid in your back
pocket, then getting mugged.

Your cash gets stolen, so you don't get any money back. At least if you use
a credit card, you are protected somewhat by the credit card company if the
card gets stolen and can easily get a refund.

Heck, if I compromised your card details and took money out, your bank would
give it back.  Try that with stolen cash.

It's about time cash died.

But that's you, not everyone is the same, and you have to take that into
account. The point is that if you offer to pay for a meal with cash or your
usual debit or credit card, and the proprietor insists you use a touchscreen
or, even worse, asks for your PIN so it can be entered, that isn't
acceptable! You have to look at the wider picture Steve, not just what you
can do with a Smart device.

That is correct, the speech is silenced, audible clicks are still there and
the screen curtain provides privacy.

That turns speech off but leaves VoiceOver still running. The screen Curtain
is a function of VoiceOver.

For example, on older touch screen devices, you could use ordinary
headphones.
On more recent ones, they have a bespoke connector

This is an issue I came across some time ago in a local take out.  I
told them the problems, and gave them advice.  we came to an
arrangement about payment with an app the shop used, they refunded me
the standing charge for the app if I used that to place order, as the
app
was accessible.

list. However, I and a number of others feel this is an important

issue to warrant it.





It has come to the attention of members of another list, that some
restaurants and shops are no longer offering chip and PIN machines
when the time comes to pay the bill. Instead, people are being
presented with an IPad belonging to the service provider organisation,
and are expected to type their PIN in on a silent, flat touchscreen.
In one case reported, the customer felt they had no alternative but to
divulge their PIN number to a member of staff. I've seen this in my
mobile phone service provider outlet in town. Has anyone here ever
been embarrassed or frustrated when given an inaccessible piece of
technology through which to make their payments? The people on the
other
list (New College Worcester Former Students'
Association) would like to get an idea of the scale of this problem,
and suggestions as to how it could be resolved, so that they can bring
the issue into the light and campaign for change. Yes, I know that
IPads are accessible, but you wouldn't want to turn voiceover on, on
someone else's IPad in an open plan restaurant, and have it announce
your personal details to the world at large as you type. At my Phone
Supplier shop, they suggested turning speech on and playing my input
back through the shop's Public Address system!
