I wonder whether anyone can offer suggestions as to what is happening when I attempt to download e-mail. Occasionally I get the "POP3 Network or Protocol error" message together with a dialogue (which closes in 30 secs) containing the words "15 Peer connect failure. The host has refused the connection." I have discovered that on such occasions if I temporarily close my firewall (Webroot Desktop firewall) and repeat the process, the mail comes in normally, and will usually continue to do so even when I re-load the firewall. The necessary permissions are obviously in place otherwise I would never be able to get mail with the firewall running. I normally use Pegasus Mail as my client, but the problem also occurs with Eudora or Outlook Express. Once a POP3 connection has failed, switching from my usual Google POP3 server to those of UKonline or Yahoo, on which I have accounts, also fails. Frankly I am baffled. I think that the clue might lie in the words "Peer connect failure" - but unfortunately I am out of my depth there. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I could change to a different firewall, but having another 9 months subscription to run on the Webroot I am reluctant to do so unnecessarily. I only switched to Webroot earlier this year - the free Sygate, as far as I remember, never interfered in this way.
