[access-uk] Re: PC and Online games for the VI?

Someone said that they long to play Microsoft Flight Sim - there's a podcast on
Blind Cool Tech by a blind kid who demonstrates how to play it without a sight.

Re quality of games for the blind I tried most of the ones where mentioned here
and I totally agree they are no match to the mainstream games and that there's
a lot of room for improvement in the sound quality and storylines. But the
thing is that games are visual by nature and I'm not sure if the games for the
blind can actually be as good and I particularly mean those games that involve
shooting and stuff. I myself tend to enjoy text adventure games such as those
from InfoTech.

Cheers,
Amro

  David,

  Re: Same quality of sounds.

There's loads of SFX librarys out there, the BBC, Hollywood SFX etc.

Heck, I'd even by a dev a set if they promised it would be used.

I don't think it's a case of standards. I recognize it's going to be the
same, hey ho we're missing a sense. So it's illogical to therefore think it's
going to be the same. I don't think standards have to slip though.

This issue is as much about inclusion as entertainment and lessons can be
learned by discussing past experiences say as a sighted person.

You never know we might just have the next VI Senior DEV or CEO for a huge
gaming company on this list. How better for them to find out what allot of us
are longing for if we can't mix and mash the two gaming areanas. That being
sighted and non-sighted in a discussion.

It's big picture and not off topic.

  Barry.

Not sure why we are talking about games which are obviously not for the
Blind, and cannot be played by the blind. So I am going to discuss games
played by blind people as I have never played games for the sighted.

My first experience of these games were games designed for and played on the
Eureka. I quite enjoyed some of these, particularly the Infocom games. Some
of the pc games made for the blind have been fun to play. the GMA games are
pretty good, and I had a lot of fun with "Shades of Doom". Unfortunately, some
of the producers of games for the blind had to give up working on new games
because too many blind people were pirating the games so not enough were being
sold to make it worthwhile. There were also some fairly good BSC Games, one
called "Troopanom" I think was okay. some people have tried to work on sports
games, but nothing has really been satisfactory.

The latest arrival on the games scene to my knowledge is Q9, which is one of
those games where you follow an arrival from space and try to get him through
various levels, fighting monsters and wild animals through jungles and caves.
This is nothing too complicated, mainly relying on fast reactions, but it has
passed a few hours for me.

There are also the Bavisoft games, although I am not sure whether they are
still producing new ones.

There used to be many mailing lists for games, but most of these appear to
have been disbanded.

It would be good to have some new games, but it is unrealistic to expect the
same sounds and standards of production you get from games for the sighted.
Blind gamers are just not going to buy in sufficient quantities for companies
to make a profit.

I am sure there are one or two I have not mentioned, one called "Pipe" comes
to mind. I just wanted to discuss games for the blind rather than games for
the previously sighted.

  Hi Barry and all,

Firstly, good to have you back Barry....

Going back to older games, the Commodore c64, remember the tapes?? Well there
was a game called Uridium, it was a horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up where you
were in a small space ship, graphics were not spectacular; compared to todays,
but has a lot of the play-ability not suffered as a result? Another example was
Speedball 2 on the Amiga, graphics, nothing special but really enjoyable 2
player ice hockey-esque by Bitmap brothers.

  Mike
