Hi Ian.
I, like so many others, had been waiting with baited breath for the release of
the Orbit Reader and so ordered it as soon as I was able.
I already have, and extensively use, the Focus 40 which I really like but
thought it would be good to have something as an addition, not as an
alternative.
So I tried it for a couple of days: I wrote a couple of notes, these were okay
although for some reason they seemed to appear in more than one place: I
lookedat the books on the card: thought I would read Far From The Maddening
Crowd but there was so much to plough through before getting to the actual
beginning of the book: I saw no way to get there apart from holding the
panning butto down so that it would move more quickly.
I also used it with my iPhone: connection was so easy, not even having to
enter a number for pairing: but again, moving quickly from message to
,message, or through FaceBook or emails, it is just too slow for me.
I knew it was not possible to quickly make a correction and it proved more
annoying than I had expected: also the constant noise, rather like a moth at a
window: that I found a little irritating.
The Braille I think is fantastic: very clear but, like I say, it is not for me
but if I hadn’t tried I would have just kept wondering what I was missing.
I think it is a shame there isn’t a case to go with it: did I see on a video
from someone in Canada that they do have a case?
I think, like I said, for people who can’t afford the usual Braille displays it
is an answer, just not for me.
Mandy.

I for one would be interested in knowing what reasons caused you to make that
decision Mandy especially as the jury could be said to be pretty much out on
the Orbit.

Hi Paul.
Thanks for your very informative reply and answering my questions but I have
decided the Orbit is just not for me. It has made me more appreciate my Focus
40, it's great for people who can't afford the other displays which, of course,
is really what it's meant for.

Hi Mandy
You can search for text in any document you have on the Orbit. Press space and
f then type in the search string. This must be as it appears on the Orbit.
To delete a document, find it in your list and then press space and d then dot
8 to confirm.
To add to a document, open it then press space and e to go into edit mode. You
can use the left and right arrows to move the cursor through a document you are
creating or editing. Press dot 7 to backspace characters. When you are done
composing or editing, press select twice to go back to reading mode in the file
you were editing. The file is automatically given the first 20 characters you
type when first creating a file. You can change this by finding the file in
your list, press space and r to rename. Type in the filename and press dot 8 to
confirm.
The Orbit works very well with the iPhone. To delete an email: in your inbox
move from mail to mail with the left and right arrows. You can open the email
with select. When moving through your inbox, the Iphone will speak or display
on the orbit the first 5 lines of an email which may be enough to show if you
want to keep it or delete it. To delete press the up arrow once to delete then
press select to confirm.
Within an email You can press keys 456 and space to move to the bottom of the
email then press left arrow to delete then press select.
This applies to the native app on the iPhone.
I hope this answers your questions.
Regards
Paul
