You can't buy new Optacons, but occasionally second hand ones come out of the woodwork or cupboard. Thankfully they can, in the main, still be serviced and repaired. I thought they'd been discontinued. -----Original Message----- From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Pele West Sent: 01 November 2007 08:47 To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Re: Optacon Question Hi Wendy and Everyone You beat me to it. I could not have put it better. I think the feeling was that, as scanners were so much easier to use, Optacons were redundant. I know some people had problems identifying the letters from the vibrating rods. I have had an Optacon since 1972 and think it is the best reading machine ever developed. It does not translate the print, as a scanner does, it provides your finger with an image and you do the translation. I like that as I feel I am in control.
