[access-uk] Re: OT: Linux Accessibility in crisis?

Interestingly, this is what happens when large companies get involved in development for their own purposes.

I believe sun's motivation was to satisfy us government requirements in order to get orders from them.

It also seems that, unlike speakup, very little development, if any, of orca is done by blind people.

I just hope that this can now become a "real" open source project with contributions from people interested in accessibility for the right reasons.

If any doubt remains, look at the accessibility of open office in windows, seemingly because of the use of java, another "sun project.

This is absolutely disgraceful. Why is it that accessibility for the Blind and
other groups requiring it is the first thing to go when a commercial company
acquires another? Hopefully, if Will cannot continue to develop Orca in his own
time, another company such as Mozilla will step up to the plate.

Afraid not. And I'd assume it's cost cutting as with everything else on the

Hi everyone,
Recently Oracle has purchased Sun. One of the first things they did was
to lay off the Gnome accessibility leader as well as the Orca
development leader. Please tweet or blog or post to your myspace or
facebook pages. Let Oracle know this kind of total disrespect for
accessibility will not be accepted. I am sure that other companies are
watching this move to see how the blind community takes it. So, even if
you do not now and do not plan to use Linux or the Orca screen reader,
please join our cause. Even leaving a comment on blogs with posts on
this subject will help. Here are a couple to read for more information:

There will also be something on my blog as soon as my rage subsides
enough to keep it G rated lol.
Thanks for your help in this matter

HP Comment:
This is concerning indeed. I just hope the Linux user community can
utilise
it's one great asset: shared and open development. As long as the user
community doesn't let this die, there will always be those that are
willing
to step up to the challenge of keeping Linux accessibility going.
